What Licensing Actually Means

Becoming a licensed plumber is not a quick process. In most states and provinces, it requires completing a formal apprenticeship that lasts four to five years, working thousands of hours under the supervision of a licensed journeyman or master plumber, and then passing a written exam that tests knowledge of plumbing codes, safety standards, and technical practices.

Many states have multiple license tiers. An apprentice works under supervision. A journeyman can work independently. A master plumber can supervise others, pull permits, and run a plumbing business. Each step requires documented experience and passing an exam.

When you hire a licensed plumber, you are hiring someone who has demonstrated competence through a structured, verified process. When you hire an unlicensed plumber, you have no way to verify their training, experience, or knowledge of code requirements.

The Insurance Problem

Enter the plumber's name or business name. Confirm the license type, that it is current and not expired, and that there are no disciplinary actions on record.
